DIY Beyonce’s Renaissance Mirror Ball Hat

Alien Superstar who? 🙂 Last night I went to Beyonce’s Renaissance Tour and it was literally life altering. She was just . . . unreal! UN. REAL. Queen Bey forever.

Okay so naturally, what’s the first thing I do after getting a ticket confirmation – I start thinking of my concert outfit. It took me up until 1 week before the show to nail down my clothes, but I knew from the very beginning I absolutely needed to have a version of the mirror ball hat. That was a non negotiable.

Making this hat cost me a total of $48 and 14 hours.

That’s correct, I spent roughly 14 hours on this cowboy hat – working on it about 1-1.5 hours at a time. The process was fairly simple, but let me tell you . . it is extremely tedious. So get all your materials, put on some COZY clothes, and put on your favorite Beyonce songs. You’ll be working on this art piece for some time.

Written Instructions:

  1. Using the exact knife, cut the mirror tiles so that they are in one line
  2. Glue a small portion of the hat (I started at the band and worked upward toward the crown)
  3. Peel the adhesive backing on the mirror tile and stick to the glue
  4. Repeat until the top of the hat is covered
  5. Cut the fabric to your preferred size (this may vary depending on your hair) and glue to the inside back brim
  6. Continue gluing the mirror tiles on the inside of the hat is covered to your preference

Tips:

  • Don’t be scared to cut the tiles to be 2 -3 or even 1 tile at a time. This will take more time, but it will also reduce the amount of gaps between the tiles.
  • Try to follow the natural curves of the hat – similar to a painting, the tiles will create “strokes”
  • Keep your hairstyle in mind! I figured my hair would be down and it was important for me to protect my curly hair from getting snagged or knotted due to the tiles on the back inside brim of the hat – this is why I opted for metallic fabric instead of mirror tiles completely throughout the hat.
  • Remember to have fun!

When I searched for mirror or disco ball cowboy hats online, I saw several options anywhere from $40 – $405. The original hat Beyonce wore was from Abby Misbin who sold (and still sells) the original hat on Etsy. Depending on the trims you choose, the hat costs between $200 – $405. And now that I have created one myself, I can say these hats are well worth the price she’s set.

Overall, I’m super happy with how my version turned out!
